California — Arcadia Mayor Eileen Wang has resigned after reaching a federal plea agreement in a case accusing her of acting as an unregistered foreign agent for China and promoting Chinese government propaganda in the United States.
According to court filings, Wang admitted to activities carried out between 2020 and 2022 under the direction of individuals linked to the Chinese government.
Federal prosecutors alleged that Wang promoted state-aligned messaging and posted content advancing Beijing’s narratives, including articles disputing reports of persecution against Uyghur Muslims in the Xinjiang region.
Wang stepped down from office shortly after details of the plea agreement became public on Monday.
The case centres on allegations that she acted on behalf of the People’s Republic of China without registering under U.S. foreign agent disclosure laws, which require individuals representing foreign governments in political or public influence activities to formally declare such relationships.
Authorities said the activities involved efforts to shape public perception in favour of Chinese government positions.
The case comes amid heightened tensions between the United States and China over issues including foreign influence operations, national security, technology competition, and human rights concerns.
The Xinjiang issue remains particularly sensitive internationally, with Western governments and rights organisations accusing Beijing of widespread abuses against Uyghur Muslims — allegations China has consistently rejected.
Analysts say the case is likely to deepen scrutiny of alleged foreign influence efforts targeting local political institutions and public officials within the United States.
