Abuja, Nigeria

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, officially opened the main carriageway of the Outer Southern Expressway (OSEX), a major road project designed to reduce traffic congestion and make movement easier within Abuja.
The newly completed road stretches from Ring Road One Junction to Ring Road Two Junction and is expected to serve as an important alternative route for motorists travelling across different parts of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, government officials said the project is part of ongoing efforts to improve Abuja’s road network and address the growing traffic challenges facing the city.
For many residents, daily traffic has become one of the biggest problems in Abuja. Long queues of vehicles during morning and evening rush hours have become common as the city’s population continues to grow rapidly.
With the opening of the OSEX main carriageway, motorists are expected to enjoy shorter travel times, easier access to different districts, and less pressure on existing roads.
Why the Road Matters
When Abuja became Nigeria’s capital city in 1991, it was designed to avoid the severe traffic congestion often associated with Lagos.
However, over the years, Abuja’s population has grown much faster than originally expected. Millions of people now live in the city and nearby satellite towns, leading to a sharp increase in the number of vehicles using the roads every day.
As more people move into the capital, transportation infrastructure has struggled to keep pace with demand. This has resulted in frequent traffic bottlenecks, longer commuting times, and increased pressure on existing road networks.
Urban planning experts have repeatedly called for the construction of more roads and transport infrastructure to support the city’s growing population.
Expected Benefits
Government officials believe the new expressway will bring significant benefits to residents, businesses, and investors.
By providing a faster and more efficient route, the road is expected to reduce travel delays, lower transportation costs, and improve access to commercial and residential areas.
Businesses operating in Abuja could also benefit from easier movement of goods and services, while property development in surrounding areas may receive a boost as accessibility improves.
Experts say modern road infrastructure plays a key role in economic growth because it helps businesses operate more efficiently and encourages investment.
Part of Renewed Hope Agenda
The OSEX project forms part of the Federal Government’s wider infrastructure development programme under President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
The administration has repeatedly stated that improving roads, transportation systems, and other critical infrastructure remains a priority for supporting economic growth and improving the quality of life for Nigerians.
Residents and road users will now be watching to see how much impact the new expressway has on traffic flow across Abuja in the coming months.
With the city continuing to expand, many believe projects like the OSEX carriageway will be crucial in helping Abuja meet the transportation needs of its growing population.
