UNIJOS Student Regains Freedom After 10 Days in Captivity

Jos, Plateau State – Zaria, Kaduna State route, Nigeria

A kidnapped student of the University of Jos (UNIJOS), John Arum Azi, has regained his freedom after spending 10 days in captivity following ransom negotiations that ended at ₦6 million.

Azi, who is a student of Early Childhood Education, was abducted while travelling from Jos, Plateau State, to Zaria in Kaduna State. His release has now been confirmed by his family, who shared a video on Wednesday showing him reunited with loved ones.

The incident first gained widespread attention after a disturbing video surfaced online showing Azi being brutalised by his captors. In the video, the abductors initially demanded a ransom of ₦30 million and threatened to kill him if their demand was not met.

As the situation developed, negotiations began between the family and the abductors. The ransom was later reduced to ₦6 million.

According to the family, the money was raised through contributions from concerned Nigerians who rallied to support efforts to secure his release.

Despite the payment of the ₦6 million ransom, the abductors were reported to have later demanded an additional ₦4 million. However, the student was eventually released and has since been reunited with his family.

The confirmation of his freedom came through a video posted by his family on social media, marking the end of a 10-day ordeal that had drawn concern and attention from the public.

Kidnappings along major travel routes in parts of northern Nigeria have continued to raise safety concerns for students, commuters, and travellers. The Jos–Zaria corridor, in particular, is frequently used by students and residents moving between Plateau and Kaduna States.

As of the time of this report, the family has confirmed Azi’s safe return, bringing relief after days of tension and uncertainty. No further official statement has been issued regarding the incident.
