WASHINGTON, D.C. — In a move that could reshape the future of artificial intelligence regulation worldwide, the United States government has ordered AI company Anthropic to suspend access to its newly launched Claude Fable 5 and Claude Mythos 5 models, marking what appears to be the first government-mandated withdrawal of a frontier AI system on national security grounds.
The directive, issued under U.S. export control authorities, required Anthropic to block access to the models for foreign nationals globally. According to the company, the sweeping nature of the order left it with no practical alternative but to disable both systems entirely, including for American users.
The intervention came just three days after the models were launched, transforming what had been one of the most anticipated AI releases of 2026 into a major confrontation between Silicon Valley and Washington.
Government Cites Security Risks

Fable 5 was released as a public-facing version built on the same underlying technology but equipped with broader safety guardrails intended to prevent misuse.
The U.S. government reportedly concluded that those protections could potentially be circumvented, prompting the unprecedented intervention.
Anthropic Rejects the Rationale
While complying with the order, Anthropic has openly challenged the government’s assessment.
The company said its own review found only a narrow and non-universal workaround that identified a small number of previously known software vulnerabilities. It argued that comparable capabilities already exist in other publicly available AI systems and questioned whether the measure was proportionate to the risk.
In a strongly worded public statement, Anthropic said it disagreed that the discovery of a limited jailbreak pathway justified the recall of a commercial model deployed to millions of users.

Despite its objections, Anthropic disabled both models while engaging with regulators in an effort to restore access.
