Abuja — The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has issued a critical cybersecurity alert warning that a new artificial intelligence-powered malware known as “DeepLoad” is actively targeting Nigerian government agencies, banks, businesses, and individuals.
In an advisory released on Tuesday, the agency described DeepLoad as an advanced malware strain designed to infiltrate systems, steal sensitive information, and evade traditional cybersecurity protections through AI-enabled techniques.
According to NITDA, the malware is capable of compromising login credentials, harvesting sensitive data, bypassing security systems, and deploying malicious payloads through deceptive files and phishing campaigns.
The agency warned that the threat poses significant risks to both public and private sector institutions, particularly as Nigeria continues to expand its digital infrastructure and online services.
Cybersecurity experts say AI-powered malware represents a growing challenge because of its ability to adapt behaviour, automate attacks, and avoid conventional detection systems.
NITDA advised organisations and individuals to strengthen cybersecurity measures by updating security software, enabling multi-factor authentication, avoiding suspicious downloads and links, and improving internal cyber awareness practices.
The agency also urged institutions to enhance network monitoring and incident response systems while promptly reporting suspected breaches to relevant authorities.
The warning comes amid increasing concern over cyber threats targeting Nigeria’s financial and digital ecosystem, with analysts cautioning that the rapid growth of digital services must be matched by stronger cybersecurity investment and resilience frameworks.
