Nigeria Police Clamp Down on Officer Over Controversial Killing

Abuja, Nigeria

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Disu, has approved the dismissal and prosecution of Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Nuhu Usman over the killing of a 28-year-old suspect, Mene Ogidi, in Effurun, Delta State.

The decision follows findings from the Force Disciplinary Committee (FDC), which reviewed the circumstances surrounding the incident and concluded that the officer violated established rules guiding the use of firearms.

Speaking at an emergency press conference in Abuja, the IGP confirmed that ASP Usman and members of his team have been recommended for dismissal from the Nigeria Police Force.

According to the police, the incident occurred on April 26, 2026, when officers attached to Area Command Effurun acted on intelligence. The deceased, Mene Ogidi, had reportedly been apprehended while allegedly attempting to waybill a parcel said to contain a Beretta pistol with four rounds of ammunition.

However, the internal review found that the officer’s actions breached Force Order 237 and other regulations governing the use of firearms.

The Force Disciplinary Committee recommended the immediate dismissal of ASP Usman and other officers found culpable.

The IGP has approved these recommendations and forwarded them to the Police Service Commission for ratification, in line with due process.

He also stated that once dismissed, the officers will be handed over to the appropriate judicial authorities to face criminal prosecution for unlawful homicide.

“Upon dismissal, all officers will be handed over to the appropriate judicial authorities to face criminal charges,” the IGP said.

Reiterating the Force’s position, the IGP stressed that the Nigeria Police maintains zero tolerance for extrajudicial killings and abuse of power.

“No uniform confers the right to take life outside the provisions of the law. Any officer who violates this principle will face the full weight of disciplinary and legal consequences,” he said.

The killing of Mene Ogidi has sparked widespread outrage online, with many Nigerians calling for accountability and justice.

The IGP extended condolences to the family of the deceased, acknowledging their loss and assuring them that the case would not be treated lightly.

He added that the Force is committed to ensuring that justice is both done and seen to be done, in a way that restores public trust and strengthens institutional accountability.

The final decision now rests with the Police Service Commission, which will ratify the dismissal in line with established procedures.

The IGP also urged Nigerians to remain calm and law-abiding, assuring the public that the police remain committed to professionalism, discipline, and the protection of citizens’ rights.
