From NYSC Analyst to JAMB Registrar: The Remarkable Rise of Prof Segun Aina

Nigeria’s education sector has entered a historic new phase following the appointment of Segun Aina as Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

At just 39 years old, Prof Aina becomes the youngest individual ever appointed to lead the examination body, succeeding Is-haq Oloyede, whose tenure ends on July 31, 2026.

His appointment has generated widespread excitement across Nigeria’s education and technology sectors, with many describing it as a symbolic generational shift in the leadership of one of the country’s most influential institutions.

Prof Aina hails from Otan Ayegbaju in Boluwaduro Local Government Area of Osun State. He earned a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Computer Systems Engineering from the University of Kent in 2008 before proceeding to Loughborough University, where he obtained a Master of Science degree in Internet Computing and Network Security in 2009 and later completed a PhD in Digital Signal Processing.

He also attended the Senior Management Programme at Lagos Business School, strengthening his expertise in institutional leadership and administration.

Interestingly, Prof Aina’s relationship with JAMB began during his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) year in 2010, when he served with the examination body as a Computer Systems Engineer and Analyst. That early exposure to examination administration and institutional systems would later shape his interest in educational technology, digital reforms, and systems optimisation.

Over the past 15 years, he has built a reputation as a respected technology expert, researcher, consultant, and institutional reform specialist, working across technology, governance, education, and policy implementation.

He has advised federal and state governments on digital transformation, systems design, operational restructuring, and educational technology initiatives. His consulting experience also includes work with examination bodies such as NECO and NABTEB, where he contributed to strengthening ICT systems, examination integrity, and digital process management.

In 2010, he co-founded Fluid Click Solutions Ltd, an IT services and engineering management company, reflecting his broader commitment to innovation and enterprise development.

Before his appointment, Prof Aina served as a Professor of Computer Engineering at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, where he held several academic and administrative responsibilities. At age 39, he became one of Nigeria’s youngest professors in Computer Engineering.

Beyond academia, he remains active in youth development and community advancement initiatives, including educational support and entrepreneurship programmes.

A COREN-registered engineer, Prof Aina belongs to several professional bodies including:

Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE)

Nigerian Computer Society (NCS)

Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE)

Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET)

He has also authored numerous scholarly publications and participated in several research and innovation initiatives within and outside Nigeria.

Recently, he was appointed to the pioneer Governing Council of Bamidele Olumilua University of Education, Science and Technology, Ikere-Ekiti.

President Tinubu said the appointment reflects confidence in Prof Aina’s blend of technological expertise, academic excellence, administrative experience, and reform-oriented leadership.

For many Nigerians, particularly younger professionals and students, his emergence is being viewed as more than a routine appointment. From serving at JAMB as an NYSC analyst to becoming its youngest Registrar, Prof Segun Aina’s journey has become a powerful symbol of competence, persistence, and possibility within Nigeria’s public sector.
