AWKA, ANAMBRA STATE

The Anambra State House of Assembly has approved Augustine Ezeka Uwaeme as the new Executive Secretary of the Anambra State Health Insurance Agency.
The approval was given on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, after lawmakers screened him during a plenary session at the State Assembly Complex in Awka.
Members of the Assembly said they believe Uwaeme has the experience and ability to help improve the state’s health insurance programme and make healthcare more accessible to residents.
Why This Appointment Matters
Many Nigerians still pay hospital bills and medical expenses directly from their own pockets. For many families, a serious illness can quickly lead to financial hardship.
Health insurance is designed to help people pay for medical treatment without having to bear the full cost alone. By contributing to an insurance scheme, individuals can receive healthcare services when needed at a lower cost.
The Anambra State Health Insurance Agency was created to ensure that more residents can access quality healthcare without suffering financial difficulties.
Focus on More Enrolment
One of the major tasks before the new agency boss will be to encourage more people to register for health insurance, especially:
- Low-income earners
- Traders and artisans in the informal sector
- Rural communities
- Elderly people and other vulnerable groups
Health experts say wider health insurance coverage can help reduce poverty, improve public health, and reduce pressure on government hospitals.
Working With Stakeholders
The agency is expected to work closely with hospitals, healthcare providers, government ministries, and development partners to improve services and bring more people into the health insurance programme.
Part of Wider Healthcare Reforms
The appointment comes as governments across Nigeria continue efforts to strengthen healthcare funding and achieve universal health coverage.
Experts believe strong leadership at state health insurance agencies will play a key role in ensuring that millions of Nigerians can access affordable medical care when they need it.
For residents of Anambra State, the expectation is that the new leadership will help expand healthcare access and make health insurance benefits available to more families across the state.
