World Cup Qualification Uncertain as FIFA Weighs DR Congo Petition

Nigeria’s hopes of reaching the 2026 FIFA World Cup remain alive after the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) confirmed it is still awaiting a final decision from FIFA on a petition against the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

NFF Secretary General, Dr Sanusi Mohammed, said this week that the federation has submitted a formal petition to world football’s governing body over the alleged use of ineligible players by DR Congo in the final of the African World Cup play-off held in November.

According to Sanusi, the NFF believes it has a “strong case” and is hopeful the Super Eagles could be awarded the place currently occupied by the Central African nation in the intercontinental play-offs scheduled for March.

The petition has continued to divide opinion among Nigerian football fans. While some believe the federation should pursue every legal option available as long as a case exists, others argue that attention should be focused on rebuilding and developing Nigerian football after years of decline.

Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar was a major setback, both on and off the pitch. The absence denied the country and the NFF significant revenue, with an estimated $20 million in participation-related earnings lost. A similar financial blow is expected if Nigeria also miss out on the 2026 tournament, which will be hosted in North America.

As the country waits for FIFA’s verdict, uncertainty remains over the Super Eagles’ immediate future on the global stage. Regardless of the outcome, pressure continues to mount on the football authorities to address long-standing structural issues and ensure Nigeria return to consistent winning ways.

For now, all eyes are on FIFA, with Nigeria’s World Cup fate hanging on a decision expected in the coming weeks.
