Abuja, Nigeria – A recent survey by Vanguard has revealed growing public concern over governance, security, and the delivery of essential services across Nigeria. Citizens cited insecurity, corruption, and gaps in public utilities as key issues affecting daily life.
Respondents highlighted ongoing security challenges, including terrorist attacks and violent incidents in public spaces. One participant, Nze Peter Chika Odoemena, noted that recent attacks reportedly resulted in “no fewer than 40 citizens” killed, sparking fear and displacement in affected communities.
Concerns were also raised about public infrastructure and utilities. Jonathan Chiedo Ikegwuruka said that road conditions in many rural areas remain hazardous, while access to reliable electricity and safe water supply is limited. Mrs. Stella Ogechi Omenka cited persistent corruption and the absence of targeted programmes for youths, widows, and other vulnerable groups.
Respondents questioned official statements claiming improvements in citizens’ welfare, highlighting issues such as food insecurity, farming risks, and the environmental impact of unregulated private water boreholes.
While survey participants referenced market attacks and fatalities, authorities have not independently confirmed casualty figures. Similarly, the Federal Government has yet to respond to the concerns raised in the survey.
Observers note that these issues underscore ongoing challenges in governance, public service delivery, and security, with citizens and civil society groups continuing to monitor developments closely.
