The Obidient Movement has clarified that it will support former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi exclusively for the presidency, dismissing reports suggesting he might be considered for a vice-presidential role under another politician.
The statement, issued on Saturday, January 3, 2026, came after media speculation that the movement might back Obi as a running mate. Dr. Tanko Yunusa, National Coordinator of the movement, described the reports as “deliberate misrepresentations and malicious propaganda.”
Yunusa emphasized that the Obidient Movement’s ideals, energy, and mobilization efforts are fully committed to Obi’s presidential ambition. “At present, we are supporting him within the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the contest for its presidential candidacy,” he said.
He further explained that the movement reserves the right to join any political party that aligns with Obi’s principles and leadership vision. Yunusa’s clarification follows his interview on The Morning Brief (Channels Television), where he stated that the movement would respect the outcome of the ADC presidential primary—even if former Vice President Atiku Abubakar won the ticket—a comment that some interpreted as potential support for Obi in a vice-presidential capacity.
Media claims suggesting that Obi might accept a vice-presidential role have not been independently verified and were explicitly denied by the Obidient Movement. Yunusa added that the group’s continued participation in the ADC depends on the transparency and credibility of the party’s primary process and warned that it may reconsider its alignment if the process is compromised.
