Nigeria and the United States have launched a new counter-terrorism working group to strengthen bilateral security cooperation and improve protection for vulnerable communities across the country.
The initiative was inaugurated in Abuja on Friday by senior security officials from both sides, including Nigeria’s National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu and senior representatives of the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM).
The platform will support intelligence sharing, operational coordination and delivery of key military equipment such as drones and helicopters for counter-terrorism missions.
The U.S. delegation was led by Under Secretary of State Allison Hooker, who is currently on a multi-country diplomatic tour. Discussions also touched on safeguarding religious communities, civilian protection and long-term security cooperation.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has recently ordered increased security deployments nationwide as authorities confront persistent violence linked to extremist groups and bandit networks.
Officials described the working group as a step toward deeper strategic cooperation between both countries, with follow-on engagements expected in the months ahead.
