Nigeria Emerges Africa’s Strongest Naval Power in 2026 — Global Firepower

Nigeria has emerged as the African country with the strongest naval fleet in 2026, according to the latest Global Firepower (GFP) report.

The ranking shows that Nigeria operates a total of 152 naval vessels, placing it 22nd among global naval forces. The assessment positions the Nigerian Navy ahead of other African maritime forces in overall fleet strength and capability.

The Global Firepower report evaluates naval power based on the size and composition of fleets, including patrol vessels, offshore support ships, corvettes and other operational platforms, rather than nuclear or aircraft carrier assets.

Nigeria’s strong showing reflects sustained investments in maritime security, fleet expansion and indigenous shipbuilding initiatives aimed at combating piracy, illegal bunkering, oil theft and other transnational crimes in the Gulf of Guinea.

The Nigerian Navy has in recent years expanded its operational footprint through projects such as the Deep Blue maritime security initiative and the commissioning of locally built vessels, enhancing both coastal and offshore surveillance capabilities.

Analysts say the ranking underscores Nigeria’s strategic role in regional maritime security and its growing responsibility in safeguarding key international shipping routes off West Africa.

The Global Firepower index is widely referenced for its annual assessment of military capabilities across air, land and sea domains worldwide.
