Nigeria’s Super Eagles delivered a dominant performance to defeat Mozambique 4–0 in their Round of 16 clash at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, securing a place in the tournament’s quarterfinals.
The encounter, played on Saturday in Fez, Morocco, saw Nigeria take early control of proceedings. Ademola Lookman opened the scoring in the 20th minute, finishing from close range after a low cross from Akor Adams. Five minutes later, Victor Osimhen doubled Nigeria’s lead, heading home a delivery from Lookman to give the Super Eagles a comfortable 2–0 advantage before halftime.
Nigeria resumed the second half with renewed intensity, and Osimhen struck again in the 47th minute, turning in another low cross from Lookman to make it 3–0. Akor Adams completed the rout in the 75th minute with a powerful strike from inside the penalty area, sealing an emphatic victory.
The Super Eagles largely dominated the contest, restricting Mozambique to limited scoring opportunities. Goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali made a crucial intervention early in the second half, cutting out a dangerous cross to preserve Nigeria’s clean sheet.
Nigeria advanced to the knockout stage after finishing top of Group C, recording victories over Tanzania, Tunisia, and Uganda. Mozambique, meanwhile, reached the knockout round for the first time in their history after finishing third in Group F.
Nigeria will now face the winner of the Round of 16 encounter between Ivory Coast and Burkina Faso in the quarterfinals, with tournament organisers expected to confirm the fixture date and kickoff time in due course.
