Abuja — What began as speculation earlier in the day has now been formally confirmed. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has accepted the resignation of Kayode Egbetokun as Inspector-General of Police.
Earlier reports circulating online had suggested that Egbetokun had been removed, but there was no immediate confirmation from the Presidency or the Nigeria Police Force at the time. The situation has now been clarified: Egbetokun submitted a resignation letter citing pressing family considerations, and the President has formally accepted it.
In acknowledging his exit, President Tinubu commended Egbetokun’s decades of service to the Nigeria Police Force and the country, noting his efforts to reinforce the nation’s internal security architecture. Appointed in June 2023, he was serving a four-year term scheduled to run until June 2027 under the amended provisions of the Police Act.
With immediate effect, the President has approved the appointment of Olatunji Disu, an Assistant Inspector-General of Police, as Acting Inspector-General. Disu, who has held key operational and command positions, is expected to steer the Force during what officials describe as a critical security period.
In line with statutory requirements, the President will convene the Nigeria Police Council to formally consider Disu’s appointment as substantive Inspector-General, after which his nomination will be forwarded to the Senate for confirmation.
The Presidency reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening national security institutions and ensuring that the Nigeria Police Force remains professional, accountable and responsive to the country’s security needs.
