Leicester / Madrid

Two Super Eagles stars were at the heart of a dramatic transfer deadline day in European football, as midfielder Joe Aribo sealed a late loan move to Leicester City, while forward Ademola Lookman completed a high-profile permanent switch to Atlético Madrid, marking contrasting but equally significant turning points in their careers.
While Aribo’s move represents a bid to rediscover form and relevance after a difficult spell, Lookman’s transfer crowns a remarkable rise to the elite level of European football following his historic exploits in Italy.
Leicester City confirmed Joe Aribo as their first signing of deadline day, announcing the Nigerian midfielder’s arrival on loan from Championship rivals Southampton until the end of the season.
For Aribo, the move offers a much-needed lifeline.
Now 29, the midfielder has endured a frustrating period at Southampton, where limited game time stalled his momentum after an impressive rise earlier in his career. Reports suggest the loan move could pave the way for a permanent switch, with Aribo expected to be available on a free transfer in the summer when his Southampton contract expires.
Leicester’s decision to act swiftly was driven by urgent circumstances. The club is grappling with a midfield injury crisis, with Jordan James and Aaron Ramsey both ruled out until March, while Hamza Choudhury awaits scan results on a knee injury. The Foxes also sanctioned the departure of Boubakary Soumaré to Qatar just days earlier, leaving manager Enzo Maresca short of options.
Aribo is expected to compete for the number-eight role in James’s absence but brings added value through his versatility. Comfortable across central midfield positions, he offers Leicester tactical flexibility at a critical stage of the season.
Aribo’s career path has been anything but conventional. He began in non-league football with Staines Town before earning a move to Charlton Athletic, where his performances caught wider attention.
His breakthrough came at Rangers, where he developed into a key player, winning the Scottish Premiership and featuring in a UEFA Europa League final. Those performances earned him a Premier League move to Southampton in 2022.
However, the transition proved challenging. With competition for places and managerial changes limiting his role, Aribo struggled to establish himself at St Mary’s. The Leicester loan now offers him a chance to reset, rebuild confidence and reassert his value at a club with promotion ambitions.
For Leicester, the deal is low risk. Should Aribo impress, the club holds the option to sign him permanently at no cost — a potential bargain in an increasingly inflated transfer market.

Atlético Madrid officially confirmed the signing of Ademola Lookman from Atalanta on a permanent deal, with the 28-year-old signing a contract that runs until June 30, 2030.
Atlético described Lookman as a versatile and dynamic attacker capable of operating as a second striker or on either flank, where his pace, movement and dribbling ability thrive. He completed his medical in Madrid before signing at the club’s Riyadh Air Metropolitano offices.
Born in Wandsworth, London, Lookman came through the youth ranks of Waterloo FC and Charlton Athletic, making his senior debut in 2015. His career path took him through Everton, RB Leipzig, Fulham and Leicester City before a defining move to Atalanta in 2022.
It was in Italy that Lookman truly flourished.
At Atalanta, he re-established himself as one of Europe’s most devastating attackers, combining efficiency with big-game impact. His crowning moment came in the 2023/24 UEFA Europa League final, where he scored a historic hat-trick as Atalanta stunned Bayer Leverkusen 3–0, inflicting the German side’s only defeat of the season.
Across his Atalanta spell, Lookman recorded 55 goals and 27 assists in 137 appearances.
An England youth international, Lookman won the 2017 FIFA Under-20 World Cup before switching allegiance to Nigeria. He made his Super Eagles debut in March 2022 and has since earned 41 caps, scoring 11 goals.
His rise earned continental recognition with the Africa Player of the Year award in 2024, achieved while at Atalanta. In an emotional farewell message, Lookman thanked the Italian club for ending a 61-year trophy drought and shaping the most successful chapter of his career.
Aribo’s loan move and Lookman’s blockbuster transfer reflect the breadth of Nigerian footballing talent across Europe — from players fighting for revival to those reaching the summit.
For Aribo, Leicester offers a chance to reclaim momentum and remain relevant at club and international level. For Lookman, Atlético Madrid presents a new challenge that could further elevate his status on the world stage.
Together, their deadline-day moves underline the growing influence of Nigerian players across Europe’s top leagues.
