Dangote Refinery Sets Global Record with 650,000 bpd Capacity

February 19, 2026 — Dangote Refinery has become the first refinery in the world to achieve a sustained 650,000 barrels per day (bpd) production capacity, marking a major milestone for Nigeria’s energy industry and global refining benchmarks.

The feat positions Dangote Refinery — already Africa’s largest — at the forefront of global refining output, surpassing capacity levels traditionally dominated by legacy facilities in the U.S., Middle East and Asia.

Officials say the historic achievement underlines the refinery’s ability to produce key petroleum products at scale, including petrol, diesel, aviation fuel and Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), significantly reducing Nigeria’s dependence on fuel imports.

Analysts say the jump in refining output could have broad economic implications, including:
-Easing pressure on the naira by lowering foreign exchange outflows for fuel imports;
-Boosting export earnings as surplus refined products enter regional and global markets;
-Strengthening energy security across West Africa;
-Supporting job creation and downstream industrial activity.

Dangote Refinery’s milestone also comes amid efforts by authorities and energy stakeholders to deepen local content, optimise energy supply chains and attract greater investment into Nigeria’s oil and gas sector.

Further details on production sustainability and export strategy are expected in official briefings.
