After AFCON Bronze, Eguavoen Questions Chelle’s Vision for Super Eagles

Comments by Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Technical Director Augustine Eguavoen have sparked fresh debate over Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle’s squad selection following Nigeria’s third-place finish at the recent Africa Cup of Nations.

Speaking earlier this week, Eguavoen questioned Chelle’s decision to exclude domestic-based players from his AFCON squad, a move that has drawn mixed reactions from fans and stakeholders within Nigerian football.

Chelle, however, has been widely praised for guiding the Super Eagles to a bronze medal finish, with many pointing to the team’s performances rather than the final position as the real highlight of the tournament. Nigeria ended the competition as the highest-scoring team, netting 14 goals — the most in the country’s history at the AFCON finals.

Victories against Tunisia, Mozambique, and Algeria stood out as key moments of the campaign, with the team’s attacking style and confidence earning comparisons to the celebrated 1994 Super Eagles side. The displays also helped restore optimism among supporters after recent disappointments on the continental and global stage.

While Eguavoen’s comments have been interpreted by some as constructive criticism, others believe the timing is sensitive, given the growing competition for places in the national team and the need for stability ahead of the next Africa Cup of Nations.

With the 2027 tournament scheduled to be hosted jointly by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania, attention is already turning to continuity, squad balance, and long-term planning. Many observers argue that maintaining the current momentum, while making gradual improvements, could better serve Nigeria’s ambitions.

The Super Eagles are chasing a fourth AFCON title, and administrators are now under pressure to ensure harmony between the technical department and the coaching crew as preparations begin for the next qualification cycle.

For now, the focus remains on building from a positive AFCON campaign and ensuring the team stays on an upward path as Nigeria looks ahead to its next major continental test.
