FG Says Better Communication Will Help Save More Lives During Disasters
ABUJA, NIGERIA

The Federal Government says strong and reliable communication is important for saving lives during emergencies, as the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has received Starlink satellite internet equipment to improve its operations.
Vice President Kashim Shettima made this known while receiving officials of NEMA and representatives of SpaceX, the company behind Starlink, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
The new equipment is expected to help NEMA stay connected and coordinate rescue operations more effectively, especially in remote communities where mobile networks are weak or unavailable.
According to the Vice President, one of the biggest problems emergency workers face during disasters is poor communication. When floods, building collapses, fires or other emergencies happen in areas with little or no network coverage, it becomes difficult to quickly get information, send help and coordinate rescue efforts.
Shettima said the Federal Government remains committed to improving Nigeria’s emergency response system and ensuring that agencies like NEMA have the tools needed to respond faster when disasters occur.
Why This Matters
During emergencies, communication is often the difference between life and death. Rescue teams need reliable networks to receive distress calls, assess the situation, deploy personnel and deliver relief materials to affected communities.
However, natural disasters such as floods can damage communication infrastructure, leaving affected areas cut off from the outside world.
Starlink works differently from traditional internet services because it uses satellites in space to provide internet access. This means emergency workers can remain connected even when regular mobile or internet networks fail.
Major Support For NEMA
The donation is expected to strengthen NEMA’s ability to respond to emergencies across the country.
Since it was established in 1999, NEMA has coordinated responses to major disasters including floods, building collapses, disease outbreaks, industrial accidents and humanitarian crises.
Nigeria has witnessed several devastating floods in recent years. The 2022 floods affected millions of people, destroyed homes and farmlands, and damaged roads and other infrastructure across many states.
Emergency officials have repeatedly identified poor communication as a major challenge during such disasters, especially in rural communities. The Starlink equipment is expected to help bridge that gap and improve coordination during rescue operations.
Starlink’s Growing Role In Nigeria
Starlink, a satellite internet service operated by SpaceX and founded by technology entrepreneur Elon Musk, began operations in Nigeria in 2023.
The service has become popular for providing internet access in areas where traditional telecommunications services are limited. It is now being used by businesses, schools, healthcare facilities and government agencies in different parts of the country.
Experts say the technology can help emergency agencies share information faster, coordinate rescue efforts better and respond more effectively during crises.
Preparing Nigeria For Future Disasters
The Federal Government says it is investing more in disaster preparedness, early warning systems and modern technology to improve emergency response nationwide.
Officials believe better communication tools will help emergency agencies react more quickly, work together more efficiently and get critical information to affected communities without delay.
The Starlink donation is therefore seen as more than just new equipment. It is a step towards strengthening Nigeria’s ability to respond to disasters, protect lives and support communities whenever emergencies occur.
