Abuja — Former President Goodluck Jonathan has fuelled fresh political speculation ahead of the 2027 elections after responding to calls for him to contest, saying he would “consult widely” before taking any decision.
Speaking to supporters and political stakeholders urging him to return to the presidential race, Jonathan acknowledged the appeals but stopped short of formally declaring interest.

“I thank you for showing interest in Nigeria. If you had no interest in Nigeria, you would not be here,” he said, adding that patriotic citizens must continue working for the country’s progress rather than abandoning it.
The former president emphasised the need for peace and credible elections, expressing concern over what he described as Nigeria’s high level of voter apathy.
“The key thing we need in Nigeria is peace, and you must continue to advocate for peaceful and credible elections,” Jonathan stated.
Responding directly to requests that he contest in 2027, he said: “You have come today to ask me to run. I have heard you. The presidential race is not a computer game. I will consult widely.”
Jonathan’s remarks are expected to intensify discussions within opposition circles as political alignments gradually take shape ahead of the next election cycle.
The former president, who served under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) between 2010 and 2015, remains an influential political figure both domestically and internationally.
His comments come at a time of growing consultations among political actors ahead of 2027, with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu widely expected to seek a second term.
