Finance Ministry Moves to Address Outstanding Contractor Payments

Abuja — Nigeria’s Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, has met with indigenous contractors to discuss the settlement of outstanding government obligations tied to capital projects.

The meeting, held on Monday, brought together representatives of the All-Indigenous Contractors Association of Nigeria and senior officials from the Ministry of Finance and the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation.

According to the ministry, the discussions focused on establishing a transparent and structured approach to resolving unpaid obligations while balancing fiscal constraints with the need to honour legitimate contractual commitments.

Officials present included the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Finance, the Accountant-General of the Federation, and directors overseeing cash management and home finance operations.

Oyedele said resolving the outstanding liabilities is important not only for contractors, but also for sustaining jobs, supporting business continuity, and strengthening confidence in government financial commitments.

He added that the administration is committed to resolving the issue in a manner that is orderly, credible, and equitable.

Industry observers say delayed payments to contractors have remained a persistent challenge in Nigeria’s public finance system, often affecting infrastructure delivery, liquidity in the construction sector, and investor confidence in government procurement processes.

The engagement comes as the government continues broader efforts to stabilise public finances amid rising expenditure pressures and increasing debt servicing obligations.
