Terra Industries Unveils Interceptor Drones, Mine-Clearing Vehicles for Military Use

Abuja — Nigerian defence technology startup Terra Industries has unveiled a new suite of indigenous defence systems, including interceptor drones and mine-clearing unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs), in a move aimed at strengthening the country’s counter-insurgency capabilities.

The systems, presented on Monday, are designed to support military operations in high-risk environments, particularly in the North-East, where troops under Operation HADIN KAI continue to confront insurgent groups such as Islamic State West Africa Province.

The interceptor drones are expected to enhance surveillance, rapid response, and potential counter-drone operations, while the mine-clearing vehicles are engineered to detect and neutralise improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and landmines — a persistent threat in conflict zones.

Military officials said the systems are being evaluated for possible deployment, noting their potential to improve troop safety by reducing direct exposure to explosive hazards and enhancing operational mobility.

The platforms are built with modular configurations, allowing adaptation for reconnaissance, route clearance, and support missions. Analysts say the development reflects a broader shift toward local defence innovation, as Nigeria seeks to reduce reliance on imported military hardware and tailor solutions to its operational environment.

If successfully deployed, the systems could improve force protection, reduce casualties linked to roadside explosives, and strengthen real-time intelligence capabilities. However, their long-term impact will depend on scalability, durability in harsh terrain, and integration into existing military command structures.

The unveiling marks a notable step in Nigeria’s effort to develop a domestic defence-industrial base, aligning technology development with evolving security needs.
