Beatrice Ekweremadu, wife of former Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu, has completed her prison sentence in the United Kingdom and has now been released after serving her term in connection with the high-profile organ trafficking case that led to her conviction in 2023.
The case, which drew widespread attention in Nigeria and internationally, involved efforts to secure a kidney transplant for the couple’s daughter. In March 2023, a UK court found Ike and Beatrice Ekweremadu and medical consultant Dr. Obinna Obeta guilty under the UK’s Modern Slavery Act for arranging the travel of a young man for an organ donation without proper consent.
In May 2023, Senator Ekweremadu was sentenced to nine years and eight months, Dr. Obeta to ten years, and Beatrice to four years and six months. Her shorter term reflected the court’s view of her more limited involvement in the arrangement.
With sentence reductions and time already spent in custody, Beatrice has now completed her term. UK authorities have not publicly disclosed conditions attached to her release.
Senator Ekweremadu remains in custody in the United Kingdom.
The case sparked significant public debate in Nigeria, touching on issues of medical access, legal ethics, and the challenges facing families dealing with serious health conditions.
