Nigeria to Launch First Floating Solar Plant at UNILAG

Nigeria is set to develop its first floating solar power installation under a new 7MW renewable energy project awarded by the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) to China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC).

The project, located on the lagoon waters surrounding the University of Lagos (UNILAG), aims to deliver reliable and clean electricity to one of the country’s leading academic institutions. Once completed, it will mark a landmark step in Nigeria’s clean energy transition and its diversification from fossil-based power sources.

CCECC said the initiative reflects growing interest in innovative renewable solutions within the country, especially amid rising energy demand and environmental concerns. Floating solar technology—deployed on water surfaces rather than land—has been expanding globally due to its efficiency and reduced land-use conflicts. The company said it will work closely with REA and other stakeholders to ensure timely and sustainable delivery of the project.

The floating solar plant is expected to bolster Nigeria’s renewable energy credentials, improve campus energy reliability, and serve as a reference model for future green infrastructure across the country.
