Kwankwaso insists he has not approved any defection by Governor Yusuf amid circulating political speculation in Kano State.

Rabiu Kwankwaso, national leader of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), has dismissed claims that he endorsed Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf’s alleged defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC). The denial comes amid circulating reports suggesting that Governor Yusuf may be preparing to leave the NNPP, sparking speculation and media attention.

Kwankwaso’s media aide, Saifullahi Hassan, released a statement on Wednesday, describing the claims as “false, misleading, and entirely without factual basis.” Hassan affirmed that Senator Kwankwaso remains committed to the principles and vision of the NNPP and has not given approval for any defection by the governor.

“Senator Kwankwaso has not endorsed, supported, or expressed approval of any alleged move by Governor Yusuf to the APC,” Hassan said. “At no time did he indicate any intention to reverse his position or encourage such political maneuvering.”

NNPP spokesperson Ladipo Johnson also refuted the reports, calling them “deliberate falsehoods” and accusing certain individuals of twisting Kwankwaso’s statements to mislead the public. Johnson warned that attempts to misrepresent the party’s stance would face public rejection in the lead-up to the 2027 general elections.

“This is as wicked a lie as it is clearly a shameful, blatant falsehood,” Johnson stated. “The NNPP remains unified and resolute in its vision for Kano State and the nation.”

Reports of a potential defection had emerged on Tuesday, suggesting that Governor Yusuf might be preparing to leave the NNPP, with claims that Kwankwaso had reversed his earlier opposition. At the time of this report, there has been no official confirmation from Governor Yusuf or any formal statement from the party indicating a change in his membership status.

Governor Yusuf was elected under the NNPP platform and continues to hold membership in the party. Party officials have stressed that any changes in political affiliation would be formally communicated through verified channels and that speculation should not be treated as fact.

The NNPP has urged party members, the media, and the general public to avoid circulating unverified claims, emphasizing the need for accuracy during periods of political uncertainty. Officials highlighted the risk of misinformation influencing public opinion and causing unnecessary tension within the party and the state.

“We wish to state unequivocally that this report is false, misleading, and entirely without factual basis,” Hassan reiterated. Johnson echoed this sentiment, noting that the party would continue to monitor and correct any misrepresentations that might arise.

The NNPP maintains that any developments regarding political movements by Governor Yusuf—or any party member—will be communicated through official channels, ensuring transparency and adherence to democratic principles.

Political analysts note that rumors of high-profile defections are common in the months leading up to elections, often used to test public sentiment or apply pressure on parties. In this context, the NNPP’s swift denial seeks to preserve party cohesion and prevent potential destabilization within Kano State.

For now, Governor Yusuf has not made a public comment on the alleged defection. Party officials have reiterated that verified information remains the only reliable source for updates on political alignments, urging citizens and media outlets to exercise caution and responsibility in reporting political news.

As Nigeria approaches the 2027 general elections, the NNPP’s handling of this situation highlights the ongoing importance of credible communication and party discipline in managing rumors and maintaining public trust.
