AFRICAN UNION EXTENDS MANDATE OF MULTINATIONAL TASK FORCE AGAINST BOKO HARAM

The African Union (AU) Peace and Security Council has renewed the mandate of the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) combating Boko Haram in the Lake Chad Basin for another 12 months, covering February 1, 2026, to January 31, 2027. The MNJTF comprises military personnel from Nigeria, Cameroon, Chad, and Benin, following Niger’s withdrawal from the force in 2025.

The decision was taken during the Council’s 1318th meeting on December 15, 2025, as documented on the AU website. The renewal calls on the AU Commission and the Lake Chad Basin Commission (LCBC) to update the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and the Support Implementation Agreement, which guide AU support to the MNJTF. The Council also emphasized continued coordination on the Regional Strategy for Stabilization, Recovery, and Resilience 2.0.

In a report presented to the Council, the AU Commission Chairperson highlighted progress in the fight against Boko Haram and violent extremism while condemning ongoing terrorist attacks in the region. Tribute was paid to MNJTF personnel who have lost their lives in service.

The Council welcomed the launch of Operation Lake Sanity III, a military initiative aimed at reducing Boko Haram activity, and urged sustained support from the AU and the international community. It also noted operational gaps in MNJTF capabilities, including shortages of air, amphibious, counter-drone, and anti-IED assets, calling on member states and partners to provide additional assistance.

In a statement, the Council said:

“We commend the LCBC and all MNJTF troop contributing countries for their continued sacrifices and commitment to defeat Boko Haram, stabilize the region, and restore lasting peace.”

The Council further highlighted worsening humanitarian conditions linked to climate change and displacement, stressing the need for coordinated regional responses to address the crisis.

The AU Commission and LCBC are expected to implement the renewed support agreements, while the Council will continue monitoring MNJTF operations and developments in regional security.
